01-16More than 335,000 Americans are employed by the Big 3 Automakers in our country, and Runde Auto Group employs over 120 people in the Tri-State Area. One out of ten people in America are employed in a service that is related to the U.S. auto industry.

Imagine what the lack of competition will do the the cost of your next vehicle….no matter what the make is.  The lack of any new domestic makes, will force Americans to buy new imports or used vehicles.  Each American should ask themself: Will I have to wait longer for my new vehicle because there is a backorder on parts for it?  Will I have to pay substantially more than the suggested list price or book value because of a possible vehicle shortage?

If we were to lose the Big 3, it would be metaphorically comparable to a meteorite hitting the US.  We could predict some of the immediate effects, but we wouldn’t know all of the other implications until the big cloud of dust and devastation cleared … and that would take years.

If you pull a card out from the top of a house of cards, you may lose part of the house, but at least you’re still in the game.  If you yank one out from the middle or the foundation … well you know what will happen. If a plant closes, so do the suppliers, local stores, and the domino-effect continues.

Here are some of the immediate effects that would occur from the collapse of the domestic automakers:

  • Nearly 3 million jobs would be lost in the first year alone-with another 2.5 million to follow over the next 2 years
  • Personal income in the U.S. would drop by more than $150.7 billion in the first year
  • The cost to local, state, & federal governments could reach $156.4 billion over 3 years in lost taxes, & unemployment & health care assistance
  • Domestic automobile production would more than likely fall to zero-even by international producers, due to supplier bankruptcies
