Winter’s Coming…Are You Ready?

As much as we hate to admit it, winter is just around the corner, which means very cold weather and lots of snow (especially in Runde country). Have you thought about what you need to do to winterize your vehicle? There is a lot more to it than most people think. I have compiled a checklist for you to use. Winter conditions can sneak up on us if we aren’t careful, so start thinking about it early!

DON’T LET THIS BE YOU!!

  • Make sure your brakes are equalized and not pulling to one side.
  • Flush out your cooling system and put anti-freeze in. Check containers, belts, hoses, pressure caps, and thermostat.
  • Make sure battery connections are clean and tight.
  • Check your engine for faulty wiring, worn out spark plugs, sticking choke or emission control devices. These make it difficult for your vehicle to start.
  • Check the muffler and tail pipe for carbon monoxide leaks.
  • Keep at least half a tank of gas in your car at all times. Also add gasoline antifreeze occasionally.
  • Install winter wiper blades and cold weather washer fluid.
  • Change the oil and filter. Also check the fuel, air, and transmission filters.
  • Snow tires are best, but all-season tires work in some regions. Check tire pressure regularly.
  • Prepare an emergency kit.
    • Windshield scraper and brush
    • Lightweight shovel
    • Sandbag, wire traction mat
    • Large box of Kleenex
    • Spare tire
    • Wheel wrench and jack
    • First aid kit
    • Flashlight
    • Flares
    • Battery jumper cables
  • Also don’t forget the blanket, candles, lighter/matches, lined winter boots, hat & warm clothes

We can only hope winter holds off for a little while yet, but being prepared never hurt anyone. I hope this prep course helps you out this year…and hopefully the snow stays away so we don’t need it!
