With fall and winter quickly approaching (5 days until fall, 3 months 5 days until winter–sorry to remind you all) we are trying to find a way to prepare for our 3 feet of snow. A lot of people are thinking about all-wheel-drive vehicles this time of year, but they don’t want to spend a lot of money. The automakers at Suzuki understand that, and tried to keep it in mind with their SX4 Crossover…it is America’s most affordable all-wheel-drive vehicle three years running. It comes standard with a 5-speed manual transmission, but a 4-speed automatic is available.

The all-wheel-drive SX4 Crossover has a 3-mode i-AWD (Intelligent All-Wheel-Drive) system that allows the driver to choose which mode they think is best for the conditions. The two-wheel-drive mode provides better fuel efficiency, AWD Auto Mode will move into all-wheel-drive when the vehicle feels the front wheels starting to slip, and AWD Lock sends 30-50 percent of the torque to the rear wheels for the best traction. It automatically switches back to AWD Auto Mode when the vehicle is traveling at speeds above 36 MPH.

The SX4 Crossover comes standard with power windows, locks and mirrors, remote keyless entry, air conditioning, AM/FM/CD/MP3 XM Satellite Radio-Ready stereo system, tilt steering wheel, trip computer, fender flairs and roof rails. Standard Safety features include ESP traction control (Electronic Stability Program), daytime running lights, four-wheel disc brakes with anti-locking system, tire pressure monitoring system, and six airbags, as well as child seat anchors and the LATCH (Lower Anchor and Tethers for Children) system. The Front-Wheel-Drive version comes with the navigation system as well, and is the first vehicle under $16,000 to include that feature.

There are a few packages and options you can add-on as well. The Technology package adds cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel with mounted audio controls, and an upgraded navigation system. The Touring package can be added to the All-Wheel-Drive model, and includes climate control, remote start, heated side mirrors, 6-disc CD changer, premium audio system with 8 speakers and a subwoofer, and heated front seats. There is also an optional iPod audio jack available, which is compatible with the audio controls and shows artists and song titles on the stereo display.

Suzuki and Garmin teamed up to develop the navigation system. The system has the capability of providing street maps and hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and of course, Suzuki dealerships. The upgraded version allows you to search for local events: sporting events, nightlife, shopping, local traffic, gas stations with the cheapest fuel in town, etc. It also has Bluetooth hands-free calling for your cell phones.

So, with all these options and abilities, I’m sure you’re wondering…How much?! The Front-Wheel-Drive version starts at about $15,200, and the All-Wheel-Drive with Touring package can get up to about $19,000. Fuel-efficiency a worry? Not anymore! The FWD gets 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, and the AWD gets 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.
